BMW R1100S stuck in 2nd gear - need a specialist
Does anyone know where I can take my old BMW R1100S to be repaired?
I am loathe to take it to a main BMW dealer as recently they quoted me £766 just for a service; so is anyone able to recommend a BMW Specialist who they have used before?
Bike symptoms:
Bike currently stuck in 2nd gear.
There has been a rattle for some time which disappeared whenever the clutch lever was pulled in (this indicates a damaged clutch release bearing on a car).

I called Williams BMW in Manchester during my lunch to get an estimate for repair costs.
Without looking at the bike they have quoted me £1,500 to strip down the gearbox and inspect for damage.

Adventure Bike Warehouse has sorted a number of these on the GS range.
Quality outfit and Jon is well respected.
Probably a bit far for you, but MWMotorcycle in hyde have done a few too.
Again Quality outift and Allan is a quality mechanic.

Heading to Adventure Bike Warehouse this afternoon and leaving the bike with them.
They suspect it could be the clutch and hopefully it only is the clutch.

I'd be very surprised if it's the gearbox. Most likely an issue with the clutch or it's actuation. I had a similar problem with my old Ninja - couldn't get it past 2nd gear. Turned out the gear shifter pedal needed lubricating. It was going up as I selected 2nd but because it was stiff it never fully dropped back down, and it has to centre itself before you can push it "up" again to select 3rd etc. Took it off the bike, cleaned it, heated it a little and put some LM grease into the joint. After that it snuck up and down like a hot knife through butter
So just check that the gear selector pedal is returning to centre ok perhaps? Otherwise most likely a clutch component issue and FFS nowhere near £1,500!! Typical main dealer - you just got the "tell him to f**k off" price. If it's not new (or nearly new) they aren't interested. All they want to do is supply and fit new parts to the new vehicles that they've all recently trained on - they are NOT interested in "fixing" older vehicles. Someone with a £15k new bike is their target market - someone who can spend £1k here on labour, £1,500 there etc. Not someone with a bike worth less than they'd want to charge any given punter for labour alone!
You need to find yourself a good local bike mechanic. I'd recommend Horwich Motorcycles but they're a touch too far away from you, I think!
