Drilling external walls and damp proof course

Post by Jim27 » 30 Jun 2015, 10:16

I'm about to set to building a pergola and will need to drill my external wall to affix the baton that the beams will sit on. What's the best way to do this without breaching the damp proof course? I've heard of people creating a damp "bridge" - I guess the simplest way is to not drill all the way through the brick but I'm also a little wary about the baton not being securely mounted if I just use short screws.

Anyone in the trade (or just experienced) able to give me some pointers? Last thing I want is to create a damp problem for myself further down the line!

Ta :)

Fixing a batten above DPC. Should not cause you any issue Jim . If the batten is 1 inch thick a three inch fixing will be fine. The brick willbe 4 inch. So your only penetrating half the brick. Use expansion type plugs , they grip better . Treat the back of the batten before you fix it if your not using tantalised timber

Buy one pre-made from Ikea, £165 and they look awesome, saves it rotting away in the future

The Ikea pergola's tiny; plus it's actually a gazebo, not a pergola. I'm wanting something 5m x 3m that attaches to the wall of the house.
