KTM 690 SMR (AND HELLO)

Post by BO60BYS » 21 Jul 2015, 18:47

First of all hi, been dormant on this forum for a bit hadn't bothered to make an account :) so HI

My question is anyone got one? I'm looking at moving away from a sports bikes and sports tourer to a KTM 690 SMR , i have always loved the dirty bike style crosser and have already set my mind on one so anyone got any thoughts :) and is there a place for them in the bike scene as such?

:)

:D

Hi.

Are you looking at the smr or the smc (or smcr)?

Same engine, different bikes.

Ive had one of the original 690sm's and it was a hoot!

Interesting
I was looking at these last week after having a go on a 660 SMC at Valley a few weeks ago.

However i have since been moved back to the CR250 or CRF450X as a base bike to build on.

The vibes from the 660 were shocking - actually they were beyond shocking after 5 laps i had to pull in as i could no longer feel my feet and hands.
I believe the 690 is much smoother but much heavier and lost its edge a bit and is more civilized
They aint cheap either and even used seem daft money.

for road use with the odd trackday perhaps the 450x is more suitable and reliable and less stress to live with ?

The servicing every 8 hours kinda kills that idea for me, i want something i could possibly still take abroad :) an it would sit comfortably on the motorway at 60/70 with a mini screen where as the crf and cr wouldn't last a second on the motorway, i know what you mean about the vibrations tho they do kick off a bit of rattle i find it quite theraputic haha :D

690 has more power, less vibes, is reliable, its a top bit of kit and a great choice.

The bike will hapilly go abroad.
But you will be in agony.
I took my 690 to france.

I was regretting it by stoke.....

Get it bought.

I will :) getting itchy feet wanting to get back on the wheels, 6 wheels and 12 ton is killing my sprit a bit.

There is only a few kg between the old 660 and the new smcr.
But the new girl is about 15bhp up.

I really would like to try one Lee
The 660 ticked so many box's but the vibes were unbearable and it wasn't much quicker than my trusty CRM250AR on track - however the suspension felt far more heavy duty.

the weight looks to be another 17 kilo's up, so moving from 110 to 145 odd is a fair jump.
The 450X is detuned and slower but reliable and needs servicing in miles rather than hours, but all the performance R parts could be swopped over.

Unlike the OP my requirement is slightly different, mine will be pretty well track only (but must be road legal) so i am still leaning towards a 2001 CR250 - just finding one in pristine original non abused condition with road reg is tricky.
