Welcome along, have a look at the Yamaha Tracers, there's a 700 and 900 version, both good value for money.

For riding within a budget, a Jap medium capacity twin takes some beating.

Hi Goose Sphincter and welcome to NWB.
The newer V-Strom 650 is a decent looking bike. I've been looking at them too as a commuter and continent tourer.

Passed my test a few months back as a result of what I believe is called 'Mid-Life Crisis', not yet got a bike but looking to take the plunge in the next month or so. Thought it would be a good idea to join this and hopefully benefit from the wealth of experience that the group must have.

So just thought I'd stop by and say 'Hello!'

If I do go the way of the Wee, I think it would be an older version. Another one for the mix is a Tenere after going on one yesterday, but jeez is it tall, ballls of the feet job so would have to get it lowered if I got one of those

Thing about the Tenere is it is a single. Single are fine for pottering about and scratching around lower roads, but if you want to do any distance over 100 miles at motorway speeds they ain't so great. This is where a four cylinder scores best. The compromise is a twin or triple. So in the mainstream I come back to a Transalp 700, or Versys 650.

same as anything I suppose, all seem to have their plus and minus points. At the moment, my head says V-Strom or Versys 650, my heart says Tiger 955i but as they stopped producing that in 2006/7, would I be better opting for the newer Suzuki or Kawasaki? Decisions, decisions, I guess I'll know the one when I see it.
