Another impulse buy CX500

Post by rumpoldstilskin » 19 Sep 2018, 23:34

Bought another CX500, this time a custom. Had a spare hour this week and the f**ker only turns over :)
Didn’t video it though Image

Left diesel in the pots for a fortnight, drained everything, new battery (and a few smokey terminals but she ran wahey

Bought when pissed, as is in my usual state when i’m let out every now & then. Woke up to ‘you won’ oh joy.

A crusty CX500 farm fresh from Texas. Hadn’t been run for 20+ years and had a lovely nest of skeletal mice in the radiator fan housing- nice. Actually very clean too and bar the seat and tank patina- rust free.

Plan is; stop drinking on my free days. ImageImage

Ha - I like it! I've always quite liked the look of them - something a bit different, and like many oddball things seem to have a bit of a cult following

Do you plan to properly restore it - and if so is that to keep and use or to sell on, or just try and undo your drunken purchase and flog it as is?

May we ask how much drunken you paid for it?

Stu! That look incredible.

Just bought an R80 too, well to cheap to turn away.

I paid £240 delivery for the CX, bargain of the month.

The plan is similar to Stu’s photo, i have some forks that may fit off a street triple. CBR1000rr fit but are well known to and thus very expensive.

That R80 was next on my list after the xj6.
I saw one 4 years ago at the TT. Stripped back and rusted out tank, polished engine cases . Flat tracker style it was.

Any photos?
I fancy doing one in a stripped bare euro style, yellow lamp on the fork leg, Pastel green tank and a sprung antique tractor seat.

I reckon the custom is raked out. I had to drop the fork sanctions through the yokes by about 25mm to get the bike to sit square. I can't find any pics of the R80. Your plan for yours sounds way more cool anyway ! My mates just finished a cub in the same colour scheme, pale green with beige seat cover and and matching saddle bag. The yellow taped headlamp sets it off nicely. Them balloon tyres are a must. Firestones would be my first choice but we struggle to get em over here so Avons at £200 for the pair !

I clocked them expensive firestones- i’d rather pay for a taxi than ride on them haha.

I bought this as a ‘GL500’ yet the frame accepts my CX Custom side panels and a Deluxe seat yet has the Custom tank.

All sounds a bit mish mash but should work.

If the head ankle is raked i’ll try and get it on a jig and re-angled, USD forks is a must, the eld ones look so weak.

Also looking to do a Honda NTV 650 swing arm conversion so i can run a mono rear shock and better wheel choices. Long term plan like as it’ll probably be expensive.
