R32 is a bit of a marmite car for most. You either love them or hate them, oddly enough the haters more often than not have never even driven one let alone owned one.

I love the old 3.2 v6, its simple, reliable and would you believe cheaper on fuel and insurance than the GTI ?

However it's a bit of a front heavy car and the handling suffers for this, the GTI is far more nimble and easier to chuck around but the 4 wheel drive and DSG gearbox are well suited to this engine and it shifts for a big heavy barge.
I get around 29 - 31 mpg average on the daily commute, a tad more on the motorway chilling sub 80mph and low 20's if using it in manual mode giving it some beans on a B road. Road tax is the killer though but insurance for me is sub 300 quid fully comp.
The performance figures tell one side of the story (its not actually a huge amount faster than the GTI) but it makes such a wonderful distinctive noise that really makes it such a joy.

It may "just be a golf" but this particular one is fully loaded with everything bar the bucket recaro's and has a sunroof which is really rare in the R32. The deep pearl blue (DPB) is unique to the R32 but i actually really like the red myself.

It is without question not a boy racer car but more of a comfy cruiser that's got a bit of waft about it when needed, is very easy to live with day to day and is a modest sensible car in the sea of 10 - 12k performance cars for a middle aged bloke lol. I can't see me changing it for anything else any time soon

I looked at a few of the R32's myself, even test drove two from Manchester. However for the money I had I was looking at not very well looked after examples so once I added the repairs plus the modest insurance I had to leave it.

Would still love one, in my opinion a true comfy sleeper.

Thats just it Woody - you can pick up a Mk5 R32 for 8k - but it's a brave man that does and you are dealing with the usual high miles, boy racer owned and modded cars in below average condition.
They start at 10k for nice mid miles ones and 8k buys you a high end GTI - but again i know first hand which one i prefer and would own.
