I wasn't yesterday mate
That might have been your mistake.

The alternator produces a surplus of power to re-charge your battery after starting as well as maintain the electrics while running. It is the regulators job to dump the excess power. It does this by changing the power into heat, hence the regulator has fins and is put in a well ventilated place. So yesterday you went to the Carousel, probably did some slow town work, and the weather was a bit warmer, so the regulator would have had less air-cooling and to top it off, you leave the lights off meaning the poor little regulator cooked itself trying to dump all that power.

To be fare I think it might have already died..when I decided to go out on the bike I went to it as normal to start it but it was dead so I put it on trickle charge for an hour to start it. Anyway it fired up so I went to rivi first stopped there for a couple hours before going southport..when I was leaving southport it was dead again so I bumped started it but then the rest is history.
Thinking about it when I parked it up last week there was a weird smell coming from near the battery area and I smelt the same thing yesterday

New bike time mate. That would be more than a good enough excuse for me.

My mates Hornet went through a similar episode - ran but kept blowing fuses and then died - Reg/Rect - he got one off EBay but it failed straight off - eventually a Honda one went in and all good ... There are some reliable pattern parts but getting the right one is the trick ...

It does sound like a new Reg / Rect may be needed ? - can be common on certain bike models
