Car help.

Post by owdgit » 29 Apr 2015, 21:55

Anyone able to give advice?
Daughters Peugeot 206 2.0 hdi she says the engine made a 'noise' suddenly stopped and now won't turn over.
Plenty of power in the battery, regularily serviced timing belt etc done 10k ago.
Don't know much about diesel motors
Seems like it's locked.

That's a major job sounds like poss cam belt issue and pistons may be stuck against valves

Did it lock as she was starting it? Could be the starter motor solenoid is goosed and the starter is locked onto the flywheel. Put it in gear and rock the car back and forth to try and free it or if you can get to the startet give it a few taps.

Could also have been a fuse popping that's killed power to the starter?

As Daz said could be piston/valve interference if a cambelt has snapped. If that's the case you're unlucky :(

A diesel motor works the same way as a petrol.
Pistons go up and down
Crank goes round.
Valves open and close.
You still need air and fuel for combustion.

To make a noise and stop with the engine locked means it's broken and will need pulling apart. Any oil in it?

Not easy to diagnose with that description, sorry.

:/ worrying if it suddenly stopped.
Possible causes; Starter motor solenoid may have been sticking and has now snapped/bushes worn and won't engage/is permanently engaged and won't work, fly wheel could have been stripped (unlikely), crank shaft position sensor could be buggered.
But most likely is either something along the cam belt loop- cam belt itself/seized eater pump/oil pump/AC- pump or something else running a toothed pully.

Q:Will the car crank or is it dead on ignition?

Are you able to post a video?

And where are you?

My mechanic charges a pittance per hour for labour but he's in Buracough. And I mean Cheap!
