Piston rings
Piston rings
Well the pan is suffering a little oil coming out headers and bit of oil smoke when dropping a gear out exhaust all points to piston rings as no smoke on normal running and burning not much oil but it is
So my question can I do the piston rings. Without splitting the head, could I remove sump drop the crank and remove pistons easily as this would be very economical for me or will I have to split the head I'm ruling out valve stem seals as it doesn't smoke on normal engine running

Re: Piston rings
no smudge you cant drop the crank through the sump as you need to split the crankcases, only viable option is taking the head off
Re: Piston rings
Which pan is it St1100 don't matter any way as above crank can't be dropped without splitting cases. So both heads off not hard to do to be honest. Nice timing belt makes it easier on the 1100. Chain on 1300 bit worse but still not hard just nice methodical approach etc have a crack it'll be fun. Keep us all enthralled !!!
Re: Piston rings
May as well do valve stems full gasket change maybe port and polish

After running numbers up a rebuild is going to be extremely expensive a be low 10k engine will cost 70% less I'd really prefer to do a rebuild but I can not even source piston rings

Re: Piston rings
If anyone could be helpful in the parts Fitch I have 3 sizes I don't understand which I would need

Re: Piston rings
Need see what's fitted at moment get piston out or a head off and look at piston to see what's in. Can be any
Re: Piston rings
smudge DK motorcycles have a set of Pistons for an 1100 pan not sure if they include the rings , the pistons for all 4 are £35.00 David Silver are the people to speak too re Honda spares

Re: Piston rings
Been up to a friend's whilst up rivi who explain the size diff std first bore and second bore advised to do a compression test first before I split so I'll order a test bit from eBay

Re: Piston rings
I'd be looking at the valve guides and seals first, Oil from the headers is known as slobber and usually caused by ticking over/slow running for long periods without blipping the throttle.
Oil can build in the rocker covers and flood the valves it will then drain past the guides. It will also smoke on start up. Smoke on down changes could be caused by the increase in crankcase pressure forcing oil down the guides.
Worn rings will normally give you high crankcase pressure and a lot of oil in the breather. Check breather for smoke, if the breather goes into the airbox have a look at the filter for signs of oil. This could also cause smoke as a restricted air filter would mean the engine is running rich when air is in demand ie changing down.
You've got to take the heads off anyway, so might as well lift the barrels to check the piston clearance and ring gap.
Do a compression test as well would help rule out rings also look for fuel dilution of the oil, very black and sticky.
These symptoms can also be caused by over rich mixture.
